Romina Picciau is a highly respected registered psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Australian Psychological Society. She is also a member of the Australian Psychological Board.
This means that when you are working with Romina, you can expect a professional, caring, experienced psychologist who will listen, in a safe environment and will help you develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
She has over 20 years of experience working with the whole cross-section of society; including adults, children, adolescence and couples and specialises in supporting Wellbeing, Managing Anxiety & Depression, Stress Management and Couples Counselling.
Romina has extensive experience working with private inpatients and outpatient psychiatric hospitals, government, corporations and in private clinics. Romina provides a range of psychological services using several styles of Psychological therapy such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), Schema Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Psychological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT).

Do I need referral to see a Psychologist?
No, you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see a Psychologist. You can contact the Psychologist directly and make a booking. If you decide to see a Psychologist without a referral this means you will have to pay full fee.
What should I expect from my first session?
It is very normal to feel apprehensive to come into therapy for the first time. Remember that Psychologist’s are also individuals who have had issues at some time and have been to therapy too. Feel reassured that you will be in a supportive environment where you can be heard without fear of judgement.
During your first session the psychologist will typically ask you questions about yourself, your life, and any presenting problems you would like to work on. The Psychologist will develop an individual treatment plan to address your specific needs.
What is the difference between a Psychologist and Psychiatrist?
A registered Psychologist is a health professional that has an undergraduate degree with Honours degree or Masters in the field of Psychology with a minimum of 2 years supervised experience.
A Psychiatrist has completed a medical degree with further training in Mental health. The main difference is that Psychologist focuses on the therapy, whereas a Psychiatrist can prescribe medication. However, there are some Psychiatrist that combine therapy and medication. It is quite common for Psychologists and Psychiatrist to work together to help support the patient.
Do you receive a medicare or a private health insurance rebate when you see a Psychologist?
Yes, if you have a referral from GP or Psychiatrist for a Mental Health Treatment Plan you will be eligible to receive a Medicate rebate of $86.16 per session for up to 20 sessions per calendar year.
If you have Private Health Insurance that includes Psychological services. Please contact your Private Health Insurance for eligibility and rebates.
How does confidentiality work with a Psychologist?
All discussions and personal files will remain confidential and held in secure environment by the Psychologist. However, disclosure of information can be disclosed to relevant people or authorities if there is a potential risk to you or others, risk of child abuse, enquiry from a legal guardian if you are under 16 years of age or if information is subpoenaed by a court. Your Psychologist will discuss this with you in your first session.
How much does it cost to see a Psychologist?
The fee is $230 for an individual session. A couple session is $260. There is an additional weekend and after hours surcharge applies. If you have a referral from your GP you are eligible to receive a medicare rebate of $86.16 per session up to 20 sessions per calendar year. Feel free to discuss any financial hardships with your Psychologist.
